Using the command line mount_smbfs I was finally able to mount the samba share on our Debian to a folder in my home directory. Under both Linux and Mac OS X, smbfs seems to be working quite well. If possible, the best solution is always to use rdiff-backup over SSH in the default configuration.
You can certainly try! Using a CIFS or smbfs mount as the mirror directory has been troublesome for some users because of the wide variety of Samba configurations. sudo umount /media/windowsshare/ iocharset=utf8 allows access to files with names in non-English languages. 
The NFS mount was successful and we are now using optimized NFS mount parameters, but careful analysis of your environment, both from the client and from the data domain point of view, is the first step necessary for optimal NFS performance.
